Who are we?

The Urban Equine Rescue Coalition is a united network of equine industry professionals, welfare experts, and rescue and sanctuary leaders. Together, we’re standing up for horses who have been forgotten, mistreated, or exploited — starting with those pulling carriages through New York City’s streets.

WAYS TO HELP

  • A brown horse with a red halter standing in a stable, next to a pile of hay and a red water bucket.

    ROMANCH'S LAW

Romanch's Law is the new name for New York City Intro. 943, legislation that would phase out the city's horse drawn carriage industry and replace it with a humane transition for workers. It was renamed after Romanch Mahajan, who died after being thrown from a horse-drawn carriage when the horse reportedly became spooked and the carriage overturned in Central Park in June 2026.

    TAKE ACTION

New York’s carriage horses can’t speak for themselves — but you can. Contact your City Council Member today and urge them to support Ryder’s Law (Intro 967) to end the cruel horse-drawn carriage trade and give these horses the safe retirement they deserve.
